Low Humidity Can Ruin Your Home

low humidityWe all know that the winter season can be treacherous and unbearable in nearly every facet of our lives, and recently we discussed the health risks of having low humidity levels in your home.  There are a great deal of health problems associated with out of whack humidity, but did you know that low humidity can ruin your home?

Many people aren’t aware of the havoc low humidity can wreak on the internal structure of your home, but some of the things you’re seeing around your home may be a result of this issue.  Are any of these problems happening in your house?

  • Wobbly Wood Furniture – When humidity levels rise and fall inside your home, your wood furniture is shrinking at one point, and swelling the next. As a result, the joints in your wood furniture are becoming loosened, thus making your furniture a little be less steady than it once was.
  • Damaged Books – If you have a prized collection of literature in your home, you may be noticing some changes happening amongst your books. If your pages are dry or brittle, or even yellowing, this may be a symptom of a humidity issue in your house.
  • Gaping Floorboards – As we discussed with wood furniture, wood swells and shrinks when the humidity adjusts in your home. If your wood floors are showing gaps between the planks or the boards are beginning to warp, this is a good sign that you need to check things out in terms of your levels.
  • Wallpaper Issues – If you’ve taken the time and spent the money to wallpaper your home, you want it to look its best at all times. However, if your humidity levels are off in your house, it’s not going to.  It may peel or strip from the walls as it separates from the wall.

These are just some of the issues that can come along with low humidity in your home.  If you’re experiencing any of these problems, contact us to schedule a consultation about installing a humidifier in your home.
