HVAC: Fall Prep Checklist

Furnace Mechanicsburg PAIt won’t be long now.  Soon, the leaves with start to change and drop from the trees.  We will be shutting down the AC unit, and opening the windows to usher in the sweet smelling breeze of fall.  Many people will switch out their shorts and t-shirts in favor of jeans and long sleeves, and the season also marks the inevitable return of pumpkin everything.  In the middle of this month, we will also have to consider preparing our house for the coming season.

  1. Shut Down the AC – Our most recent blog covered all the necessities for shutting down the air conditioning unit for the season. We covered the importance of replacing the filters, cleaning your unit, purchasing a cover for said unit, fixing any internal issues, and removing window units if you’ve got them.  This is just the first step in preparing for the fall.
  2. Check the Windows – Checking the windows for leaks and drafts will save some money over the fall, as the warm air from your house will make an effort to escape, and the cooler air of the fall will creep in. Obtain instructions for sealing leaks via a YouTube video and contact a respected contractor if you believe a particular window needs to be replaced.
  3. Seal the Doors – Unused doors to the outside are a huge source of drafts in your home. Using something as simple as paper towels in the cracks will keep cooler air from rushing in and making your rooms chillier, thus forcing you to crank up the heat.
  4. Rake Those Leaves – Once they start coming, they don’t stop and built up debris can cause an outdoor unit to function less efficiently. Sweep out from under the unit in order to keep the area clean of leaves and sticks that may fall over the season.
  5. Prep the Heat – Turning on the heat isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Preparation is necessary, and you’ll want to make sure to have your furnace inspected before the heat comes on.  If there are any issues, you’ll want to have them detected before it gets too cold to handle it.

Each of these steps can be easily taken to ensure the maximum comfort inside your home during the fall.  There is a plethora of informative videos regarding how to seal windows and doors for the season, but for the harder stuff, we can help.  Contact us today to have your furnace inspected before it’s too late!
